Review: AEW Double or Nothing 2024 (5-26-2024)
Double or Nothing is LIVE from Las Vegas! Five years of AEW! What a world we live in these days!
The Buy-In matches will be free to read here, the rest for paid subscribers! Great time to subscribe if you haven’t yet, as there’s also yesterday’s WWE King and Queen of the Ring review, a Coliseum Video review from a few days ago, and a LOT more already! If you already have subscribed, thank you!
Deonna Purrazzo vs Thunder Rosa
Rosa has a blue and white Vegas Elvis-inspired get-up for this one. This gets physical and aggressive fast, as you’d imagine from the strengths of both wrestlers and their feud to this point. Deonna focusing on the taped-up shoulder of Rosa. It’s a good match, about as good as you can expect from a pre-show situation. I like when they call her “Thunder” and not “Rosa.” Thunder is her Christian name in this scenario. Purrazzo wins with some help from the bottom rope reversing a submission into a pin, with the referee incredibly re-positioning himself for the count into the dumbest and least natural angle possible in order to miss the cheating. ***
Dr. Martha Hart, sporting another incredible hat, is here with Tony Khan! We’re coming up on the third annual Owen Hart Foundation Cup Tournament. This year, the winners of the tournaments will receive world title shots. Tony backdates this to a Christmas Eve conversation with Dr. Martha so that we don’t think he’s stealing this very original idea from WWE King and Queen of the Ring. The tournament winners will receive their shots at Wembley in August. The finals will take place on July 10 in Calgary.
The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass vs Cage of Agony
“Cage of Agony” is Brian Cage and Gates of Agony. This is very stupid and does not need to be done. This is not actually an e-federation. I didn’t listen to Caster’s rap. Brian Cage seems to respect the pump of Grandpa Billy, but still feels his own pump is superior. Cage of Agony beating some hindquarter here. “Caster said during that interview that he was the greatest wrestler in the world” — well, Tony, we all say things that aren’t true.
I like when the bigger Gate of Agony races across the ring to gingerly touch Pappy Bill with his half-closed fist. Max Caster, world’s greatest wrestler, falls off the top rope trying to do a flying maneuver. The three-man power bomb (I am not calling it a triple power bomb because that is inaccurate) hits on Gunn but Bowens saves. The very noticeable Golden Knights mascot gets shockingly involved, taking a chair from Cage. Toa Liona is really making some interesting choices in this match. Gunn cradles Bishop Kaun for the win. **½
