Classic Review: ECW November to Remember 2000
The sixth of our Classic Reviews this month, this one from ECW!
November to Remember doesn’t actually have much history of being a Great Show, so let’s take a look at what is really the absolute tail end of the company, as it would shut down about two months after this show.
ECW November to Remember
November 5, 2000
Odeum Expo Center - Villa Park, IL
Backstage: We start with promo work with ECW world champion Jerry Lynn. Talking was his strong suit. “Tonight, this belt’s not just in jeopardy, it’s in DOUBLE jeopardy!” He faces Justin Credible, Steve Corino, and Sandman in a Double Jeopardy match later. He goes WOOOORLD at the end. WOOOORLD. Then we switch to Justin Credible who’s just about as bad at talking, while Francine strokes a Singapore cane. She will have sex with him if he wins the belt back. You know, with her pussy. Sandman smokes a cigarette and there’s a beer there. He’s politically incorrect — and damn proud of it! Damn, man, that’s cool as hell. Steve Corino and Jack Victory do worked shoot stuff for theirs. Here’s Dawn Marie. Tonight is his night! He’s sure of it. More worked shoot. Jack Victory wants to have sex with Dawn Marie.
In the Ring: We’ve got Joey Styles and Joel Gertner, who likes to ejaculate on folks. Now here’s Simon Diamond, who has a problem. The crowd believe that he “sucks dick.” He says his partner Swinger isn’t here because of a broken orbital bone thanks to youngsters Joey Matthews and Christian York. Tommy Dreamer’s wrestling career is over1 because of Simon Diamond. I agree with the crowd, Simon Diamond should “shut the fuck up,” because who could possibly care. Now he takes issue with “fat” Joel Gertner, who wonders where this hostility is coming from. “Put you over,” “gimmick,” “undercard jamoke,” etc. Diamond jumps on Gertner, and Styles — who is Gertner’s great friend, jumps on Diamond. Here’s Swinger with a chair. Styles is chased off and Gertner’s going to get his arm broken, but “Man in the Box” hits and Tommy Dreamer runs in, having miraculously survived the latest end of his career. Diamond in the tree of woe, gets the chair dropkicked into his face. CW Anderson in with a spinebuster and armbar on Dreamer. Here are the aforementioned York and Matthews. Let’s have a match.
Christian York & Joey Matthews vs Simon Diamond & Swinger
We have to wait for commentary to actually start while the poor man’s Hardys hit a double power bomb on Swinger and stereo dives. York and Matthews were legitimate indie standouts of the time, kinda came around before the indies really started getting more shine, attention, and distribution after the deaths of WCW and ECW.
They were legit promising, too. Obviously Matthews had a WWE run as Joey Mercury. Match settles into being an actual tag match with Diamond and Swinger taking over. Wild that Swinger is still in TNA, 24 years later.
Finally, we have commentary, with Cyrus working solo. “No one’s following the format sheet!” Cyrus alone is funny to listen to because he’s a really good color commentator, but this is way outside of his full-gimmick wheelhouse.
