Greg Valentine & Dick Slater vs Marcus Alexander Bagwell & Big Josh

WCW Saturday Night
July 4, 1992 - Atlanta, GA

  • Valentine and Slater had plenty of history, dating back all the way to 1974 when they first squared off as youngsters in Florida, and then becoming a regular tag team in Mid-Atlantic starting in 1983, later feuding for the U.S. title in 1983-84. They also crossed paths for a minute in the WWF, including a match in Boston in early ‘87 that I want to watch sometime. They reunited in WCW in ‘92, after Valentine had (frankly long since) run his course in the WWF. They were both Watts-style guys, credibly tough veterans past their best days.

  • Valentine and Josh start it out, Josh can rumble with these fellas and has a similar-ish background, although not really because he is simply Tommy Rich’s hunting buddy, from Oregon. Bagwell is a child and gets in with Slater and puts on a kinda-shitty headlock.

  • Ron Simmons is guesting on commentary with Jim Ross. Slater in there trying to give Bagwell a bit of a veteran wrestling lesson, but Dick’s not able to totally overwhelm the youngster, either, and tags out to Valentine. Ross notes that this is the first time we’ve seen Slater and Valentine team on Saturday Night, which is technically true.

  • Valentine and Bagwell start to fumble around a bit but they work through it well enough and Greg tags Dick. DICK!!!
