WWE put up a list of the 50 Greatest Matches in WrestleMania history on YouTube, and while I obviously don’t totally agree with the order or even many of the matches on the list, it did give me an excuse to burn an evening watching six matches with the motivation of The Whim.

On the docket:

  • Dudley Boys vs Edge & Christian vs Hardy Boyz (X-Seven, 2001)

  • Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar (33, 2017)

  • Eddie Guerrero vs Kurt Angle (XX, 2004)

  • Undertaker vs Triple H (XXVIII, 2012)

  • Mick Foley vs Edge (22, 2006)

  • Bret Hart vs Steve Austin (13, 1997)

Dudley Boys vs Edge & Christian vs Hardy Boyz

WWF WrestleMania X-Seven
April 1, 2001 - Houston, TX

TLC 2! Holds up incredibly well every time I watch, this was no exception. Spectacular energy and some incredible spots, and even the stuff that doesn’t go off without a hitch serves the match’s tone.

Six guys working against themselves and their own standards, an incredibly tough job trying to continue raising the bar after WrestleMania and SummerSlam in 2000, the latter of which really should not have been top-able. But they manage it. These teams were so good at making their points pretty efficiently, the match doesn’t hang around forever just padding itself out or anything, and they both play the hits and keep it all fresh somehow.

Boring to say that Jeff Hardy is the standout, maybe, would be more clever to start chronicling all the little things Christian or D-Von Dudley do and credit them as the glue, but Jeff was really incredible, and so obviously the star of the match. Edge gets the second-most glamorous role, and yes, Christian and the Dudleys and Matt Hardy do fantastic work, too.
